The
Spring Meeting of the Chesapeake Bay Company took place on May 1, 2010,
at the Driftwood Restaurant in Coles Point, Westmoreland County, in the
restaurant's meeting room. Governor
Jean Booth McKenney convened an Executive Committee meeting at 10:00
A.M., followed by the Membership Meeting at 10:30 A.M.
The speaker was Robert J. Teagle, Education Director and
Curator at Historic Christ Church, who also addressed the
Company at the November 2009 meeting. His presentation was "The
Church in the Post Revolutionary War Era."of England in
Colonial Virginia." Mr. Teagle's talk
addressed the various ways the Colony in Virginia assessed
and addressed its complex relationship with the Church of
England. Not even the Revolutionary War severed those ties,
but made possible improvements such as the counties' having
the ability to take over the glebe lands after a period of
time. The status of dissenters was also addressed.
Dissenters could have been Presbyterians, Quakers, Puritans
or other groups who were not affiliated with the Church of
England.
The Company thanks Mr. Teagle for his
talk and PowerPoint presentation, and enjoyed the fare at
the Driftwood Restaurant.
Members who
have not yet submitted their 2010 dues payment of $15 are
asked to send them to Mary E. Stewart, Treasurer, POB 485,
Irvington, VA 22485. Checks should be made payable to
Chesapeake Bay Company of the Jamestowne Society.
Save the date
of October 23, 2010, for the Fall Meeting of the Company at
Historic Christ Church in Irvington!
